We need your voices now to protect the success of Michigan’s charter schools and the educational futures of thousands of students. The Michigan Senate is pushing a package of bills during this “lame duck” session that will put our charter public schools and students at risk of losing the opportunities they deserve. These bills claim to improve transparency and accountability. Yet, they will do little to advance student outcomes and could hinder the high-quality, innovative models that make our schools successful.

If passed, these bills would strip charter public schools of local control and hand critical decision-making to Lansing bureaucrats. Michigan charter public schools manage their finances responsibly and hold them academically and financially accountable. Lansing does not need to step in where you and your communities are already doing exceptional work.

Subject: Protect Michigan’s Charter School Success—Vote No on SB 943, 944, 946, and 947

Message:

I am reaching out to urge you to oppose SB 943, 944, 946, and 947 because I support my Michigan charter public school. These proposed bills would add unnecessary red tape to a system that is already delivering some of the best educational outcomes in the state.

Michigan’s charter schools are among the highest-performing in the state, outpacing district schools in the same areas. According to Stanford University, students in Michigan’s charter schools gain 36 additional days of learning in reading and 24 additional days of learning in math each year compared to similar students in traditional public schools, with even higher gains for African-American and Hispanic students.

Michigan charter public schools are financially accountable and fiscally transparent. Each year, charter schools adopt and review a budget, perform an annual audit, and meet reporting requirements on contracts and service providers. Beyond finances, they are held accountable by parents, authorizers, and the Michigan Department of Education for academic results.

These bills would only create administrative obstacles while jeopardizing some of the most successful schools in our communities. We respectfully urge you to vote no and protect the future of Michigan’s charter schools.
