🔹 Cyber charter students receive only 80% of per-pupil funding, while students in district-run virtual programs get 100%.
🔹 Millions of dollars are set aside to help traditional districts repair and improve their buildings—but charter public schools are excluded from these funds.

Michigan lawmakers, do what’s right—fix this funding gap!

Subject: Fund Every Student Equitably—Because Every Child Deserves a Fair Chance

Message:

Every child in Michigan deserves fair and equitable education funding, regardless of where they live, their socioeconomic status, or the type of public school they attend. Unfortunately, our current system falls short, creating unnecessary disparities that disadvantage students—especially those in public charter schools. The Governor’s proposed budget amounts to only an $18/pupil increase for charter schools, while traditional districts will receive a nearly $800/pupil increase when you take into account their foundation allowance increase and their MPSERS savings.

Charter public schools serve a disproportionately high percentage of minority and economically disadvantaged students—yet they consistently perform at or above their peers in traditional public schools. Despite this, they receive significantly less funding per student, often diverting funds from the classroom to repair or pay for facility issues.

The Solution is Clear. To ensure all students have access to a high-quality education, we must:
1. Prioritize an equitable foundation allowance that funds every student based on need, not the type of public school they attend.
2. Fully fund all charter school students to eliminate unjust disparities in per-pupil funding.
3. Continue Section 22e funding for charter schools to close the financial gap created by the permanent reduction in the MPSERS rate cap in 2024, along with additional proposed funding in the Governor’s budget to address the increased inequities.

This is not about politics—it’s about doing what’s right for Michigan’s students. We urge you to take action to ensure that every child, regardless of where they go to school, receives the funding they need to succeed.
